PURPOSE:To output quickly a Kanji (Chinese character) whose reading the operator cannot understand, by displaying all radicals having the same number of strokes as the radical of the Kanji to be retrieved and designating a radical of these displayed radicals and displaying all Kanjis having the designated radical. CONSTITUTION:When the operator operates a radical key, the device is set to a radical mode. The operator inputs the number of strokes of the radical of the Kanji to be retrieved with a ten key. Then, an area corresponding to the inputted number of strokes is retrieved by an index 61 of a radical Kanji processing part 6, and a radical group having the inputted number of strokes is listed together with numbers corresponding to individual radicals on the display screen of a display device 8. When the operator inputs a corresponding number on the list with the ten key, all Kanjis having the designated radical are read out from a radical Kanji table 63 and are displayed together with numbers corresponding to individual Kanjis as a list on the display screen.
