The staircase comprises a vertical post made up of a series of elements (1a,1b,1c) which can telescope into one another. Each element extends laterally into or on more steps (2a,2b,2c). - The elements and steps are disposed so that the post can telescope up and down between positions in which the steps are deployed and collapsed respectively.
