The power generating mechanism uses the energy of a water stream to drive paddles carried between two parallel endless chains around chain wheel pairs at either end. The chains and paddles are arranged such that the water-driven paddles are at right angles to the current and the paddles carried by the return parts of the chains are above water level. The chain wheels drive generators. Below water level, rails support rollers on chains, the return parts of the chains being similarly supported on lattice girders above water. - Typically the 35cm thick paddles are hollow and each has 8mm thick parallel aluminium plates of 5 x 5 sq.m. as front and rear wall. A typical installation may have 50 paddles of 75 sq.cm. with 2 m spacing in the water at one one time.
