Multilevel storage and handling system e.g. for cheeses - transfers e.g. pallets between members of carrier frame and vertical transporters

The storage and handling system for items e.g. cheeses comprises a storage frame (1) with vertically and horizontally spaced pairs of parallel horizontal carrier members (3) e.g. for pallets. Each member has an upwardly open U-channel which provides access to part of the underside of a pallet for a long flexible element e.g. a chain (17', helically wound on drum 10 and passing over chain wheel 19). Each chain can be inserted from one end into a carrier channel and the two chains are vertically movable. The drum is arranged in a carriage (9) with roller pairs (24) on flanges (25) of a column and chain driven (26-30). The pallets on each level can be lifted from or lowered on to the respective members for transfer between the frame and a vertical transporter. A loading and an unloading (4,9) assembly are horizontally movable along opposite sides of the frame.
