There has been significant growth in implementing electronic health records (EHR) to provide physicians and nurses with access to accurate information about their patients at the time it is needed. Most EHR research has studied the physician adoption of EHRs and other e-Health technologies. Very little research has been conducted in how nursing training programs are preparing nurses to use these technologies in the field. This study investigates the types of technologies that nursing programs teach; nurses' perceptions of EHRs and their preparedness to use those systems; and how nursing training has affected nurses use of EHRs.;Results indicate that gaining computer skills as well as receiving training to use EHRs is not going to strongly influence nurses' ease in using the system. As nurses' self-efficacy is a more powerful predictor than general computer skill and training, more importance should be given to nurses' support in using the EHRs everyday, rather than giving them training or building computer skills. While novice nurses are devoting their concentration in their new surroundings of patient care, they should develop their self-efficacy in using EHRs by receiving mentorship from experienced nurses, who are using the system everyday or for a long period of time.;National survey data showed that 99 percent of nurses (n = 248) were forced to use the EHR in their job and so their behavioral intention to use the system was predetermined. Hence, behavioral intention to use the system was not truly a variable in this study. In order to test the behavioral intention as a dependent variable, the sample would have needed the nurses to be in autonomy (independent) in the EHR.
