APPARATUS FOR GENERATING THE MAGNITUDE OF THE VECTOR SUM OF TWO ORTHOGONAL SIGNALS AS FOR USE IN A DIGITAL TV RECEIVER

For real time processing of wide-band signals, the magnitude, C, of the vector sum of substantially orthogonal component vectors &upbar& A and &upbar& B is performed with minimal circuitry by employing the algorithm C=A+KB AB and C=B+KA AB where A and B are the magnitudes of vectors &upbar& A and &upbar& B and the factor K is related to the phase angle theta of the vector sum relative to the axis vector A. For precise values of C, the value K is determined from the equation K=(1-cos theta )/sin theta AB K=(1-sin theta )/cos theta AB.
