The method comprises the following steps: - insertion of the articles in a container suitable for storing and transporting the articles; - arrangement of the container in an autoclave, fluid exchange between the interior of the container and the interior of the autoclave being possible; and - heating-up of the container and its contents to the sterilisation phase. The container (10, 12) has an opening (50) and a resilient valve element (60) which is pretensioned in its closed position. This valve can be opened manually, specifically by actuating a lever (74). The lever is held in this position by means of a rigid, yet meltable, element (84), so that the valve remains open. After a sufficient time at the sterilising temperature the element (84) melts and thus causes the valve to be closed. In this simple way articles can be easily sterilised, it then being possible to keep the sterilised articles sterile in this state for a very long period of time. IMAGE
