Method for the preparation of pharmaceutical compositions containing silver sulfadiazine as active substance.

Ointment and stable lotions contg. argenticosulphadiazine (silver salt of 2-(p-amino benzene sulphamido)pyrimidine) (I) in a hydrophilic excipient, in which the water content is 45-55% and the water droplet mean dia. varies between 2 and 10 microns, are new. The ingredients are stirred and cooled under carefully controlled conditions in order to give the desired droplet size. Usually a speed of 120-150 rpm and a temp. drop from 80 to 50-55 deg.C at the rate of 1 deg. every 5 mins, are used. Ointments are prepd. by mixing methyl hydroxybenzoate, propyl hydroxybenzoate propylene glycol and Tween 60(RTM) in sterilised water, and adding cetyl alcohol and peanut oil. This mixt. is cooled and stirred under controlled conditions and (I) added. (I) is a known antibacterial agent. The new compsns. are esp. suitable for the treatment of burns and deep-seated infections. The compsns. are stable, unlike previous lotions and ointments contg. (I).
