A continuous wave laser light beam (8) is directed at the refractory lining (6) within a furnace vessel (4), and the displacement as measured by a self-scanned linear array (14) of the reflected light beam from a nominal or reference position measured to provide an indication of lining wear or damage. The laster transmitter (7) and array (14) are scanned in fixed relationship to each other over the entire lining surface (6). Position and wear information are correlated by a computer so that refractory material may be applied to the worn or damaged areas by a gunning spray nozzle (37) to affect repair of the lining surface (6). The method and apparatus may be used shortly following each heat without the need to cool the furnace vessel.
