According to this method, a ring blank (10), of which the diameter of the external peripheral surface is greater and the diameter of the internal peripheral surface is less than those required for the finished ring. A slit is cut in the ring blank in order to make two free ends (15) and the ring blank (10) is kept in the closed position by applying a force to the latter's free ends (15). The segment blank (10) is then clamped in the closed position between a stationary clamping element and an annular clamping element forming part of a machining head, this machining head being able to move in the direction of the ring blank in order to bring the annular clamping element into engagement with the blank and to clamp it.
