Gaps, esp. horizontal ones, are introduced into masonry of existing buildings, as when old buildings are to be protected from rising damp. Use is made of a compass saw, with blade length at least as great as wall thickness plus saw thrust. This is moved at right angles to the extension of the saw cut, maintaining a correctly angled cutting edge, at a speed of advance depending on masonry characteristics. The appliance can consist of a compass saw, mounted in a support, with elongated blade, armed with diamond discs (3) on its leading edge, and with duct (9) and distributing holes (10) for feeding cooling and flushing water into the cut gap. Clean, correctly angled gaps can be cut under difficult conditions.
