A fuel gauge which averages fuel level signals responsive to the quantity of fuel in a fuel tank at intermittent time intervals in accordance with whether or not the liquid level of the fuel in the tank is stable, and calculating and indicating the quantity of fuel based in the average value. Whether the liquid surface of the fuel is stable or not is determined according to the automobile speed, ON or OFF of an ignition switch, etc. The signal values are averaged at longer time intervals when the liquid surface is unstable than when it is stable, thereby improving the response of the indication to variations of the fuel when it is stable.
