In mineral fibre insulating bodies (21) of bonded mineral fibres, in a consistency of felt or plates or in the form of shells, which have a certain and sometimes considerable compressibility, recesses (23) for avoiding a removal of material which is labour-intensive and especially waste-intensive, are produced by making an incision (26) in the edge region of the intended recess (23), the incision being taken at least down to the intended depth of the recess (23), and then forcing in or compressing the material, thus locally separated from the surrounding material, to form the recess (23). The direction of cutting and the direction of compression are here advantageously transverse to the main orientation of the mineral fibres, and this can be accomplished without problems in the case of most mineral fibre components. The preparation for producing a recess (23) by the incision (26) also does not cause any change in the heat- or sound-insulating properties of the mineral fibre insulation body (21) in this region, so that appropriate incisions (26) can also be made, for example, by punching even if there is just the possibility of forming a recess (23) at this point. Moreover, a multiplicity of incisions can be made in a suitable preset pattern so that, in different applications of the same component, only some of the pattern fields can in fact be selectively utilised for the formation of recesses. Particular advantages result from the adaptability of mineral fibre insulation shells to changing diameters of the ducts, for which they are intended, e.g. in the region of valves or adapters. IMAGE
