A device for controlling the adjustment of the pair of cone pulleys of a steplessly adjustable engine-driven cone pulley transmission for a vehicle, especially a motor vehicle, has a hydraulic control unit (8) which can be controlled as a function of the position of an arbitrarily adjustable accelerator pedal (9) and acts alternately on control cylinders (5, 6) assigned to the two pairs of cone pulleys of the cone pulley transmission (1). In order to be able to adapt the transmission adjustment better to changing operating conditions, means (7; 11) are to be provided for varying the timing of the adjustment of the pair of cone pulleys as a function of at least one operating variable of the vehicle. The position of the accelerator pedal, the rate of change of the accelerator pedal adjustment, the speed of the vehicle or even the difference between the actual speed of revolution and the desired speed of revolution of the engine (2) predetermined by the accelerator pedal may be used in this case as characteristic operating variables.
