The mechanism uses an electric micro-motor (2) with a clutch coupling at each lock. The coupling gives positive friction coupling while the door motor is activated but decouples the motor and its reduction gearing to allow easy manual operation in the event of failure of the electric locking system. The door bolt is actuated by a toothed rack (14) driven by a pinion (15) which has an internal cylindrical hole (27) backing the pinion. Two segments (28a) of a cylinder (28) of slightly smaller dia. fit inside the pinion hole. Each segment has a tongue (32) fitting into a grooved (33) bearing (30) which allows the segments (28a) to slide radially outwards when the flat spade (29) fitted to the end of the reduction gearing output shaft (22) forces them apart with its rotation. The cylinder segments are forced against the pinion to provide drive.
