Microwave welding of dielectric materials using metallic strip - uses metallic cpd. which absorbs microwaves to heat plastics film permeable to microwaves

Two films of a dielectric material, such as various plastics, are welded by placing a strip of a material which heats when exposed to microwaves between the overlapping edges of the dielectric sheets, and exposing the joint to microwaves. This technique is suited to on site assembly of large scale plastic protective films such as those used to line the walls of an artificial lake. The two sheets of plastic film to be joined (1,2) are placed so they overlap each other and a strip (3) pref. of copper powder, ferrous oxide, manganese oxide, or carbon black placed between them. A microwave generator (4) with a suitable antenna and shielding (5) is placed over the joint and when activated the microwaves heat the jointing strip (3), fusing the plastic around the strip.
