1-Alkyl imidazolium dimethyl carbamoyl pyridinium double salts of formula (I) are new: (where the dimethyl carbamoyl group may be in the 2,3 or 4-position of the pyridine ring; Rp= -(alkyl)m- or -(CH2-O-CH2)n-; alkyl= (branched) alkyl; m= 3-6; n= 1 or 2; R1= 1-4C straight or branched (un)satd. alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, carboxy alkyl, carbonitrile, or carbaldoxime; R2-R4= H or gps. within the definition of R1; X and Y= halogen or acid anions such as phosphoric, sulphuric, methane sulphonic, succinic, maleic, tartaric or phthalic acid anions). The salts have a preventative action against intoxication due to phosphorus pesticides. The salts are stable, and of low toxicity, and have a preventative effect that known agents against phosphorus pesticide intoxication do not possess.
