Imidazolium-pyridinium carbaldoxime double salts of formula (I) are new:- In (I) the carbaldoxime gp. (syn or anti form may be in position 2,3 or 4 of the pyridine ring; (R)p is -(alkyl)m or (CH2OCH2)n; m=3-6; n=1 or 2;R1 is 1-4C alkyl which may opt. branched, (un)satd. hydroxyalkyl, carboxyalkyl, carbonitrile or carbaldoxime; R2R3 and R4 are each H, 1-4C alkyl which may be opt. branched, or (un)satd., hydroxyalkyl, carboxyalkyl, carbonitrile or carbaldoxime; X- and Y- are each halide anions or phosphoric, sulphuric, methane sulphonic, succinic, maleic tartaric or phthalic anions. (I) are used for the therapeutic and/or prophylactic treatment of toxicity caused by phosphorus derivs. esp. pesticides. A typical cpd. is 1-(1-methyl imidazolium)-3-(4-carbaldoxime pyridinium) propane dibromide. This was prepd. by dissolving 18.3 g 3(1-bromo-3-propyl)-1-methyl imidaolium bromide was heated with 7.8g pyridine-4-carbaldoxime in acetonitrile.
