The detector includes two thin sheets of aluminium 10-20 microns in thickness, measuring, for example 40 cm square. They lie parallel, and are separated by a third sheet of similar thickness made of dielectric material. This third sheet may adhere to the internal surface of one of the aluminium sheets. A gap of 3-4 mm separates the two aluminium sheets, which along with the dielectric may be held in an insulating frame. Insulated leads from the two sheets are connected to the input of a low frequency amplifier. The two main sheets making up the panel are joined by a wire carrying a resistor whose value (e.g. 1.5 ohm) is related to that of the panel dimensions. The direction of received microwaves may be established using such a panel, or by triangulation the source of waves may be located.
