The helmet, which may be used for sports, or motorcycling, has a cavity (6) in the back part, with a cover (7). This cavity contains a battery (8) which may be rechargeable, together with a walkie-talkie type transmitter-receiver (11). The loudspeakers (3) and microphone (5) are built into the helmet with integral connecting wires. An automatic switch sensitive to the voice cuts off reception when the wearer speaks and wishes to transmit. Also built into the helmet there is a switch (10) to turn the device on and off a potentiometer to control the volume, and an aerial. The unit allows, for example a motorcyclist to communicate with another person in spite of the machine noise etc. As well as a radio transceiver, the helmet may be used with an intercom arrangement.
