A mixing tap has a plug which can be moved either axially in order to open and close the passages for hot and cold water or rotated to control the amount of cold, hot or mixed water to be provided when the tap is open. The plug (8) includes two plates (19, 23) of ceramic or similar materials which are supported and slide against one another in a plane parallel to or coincident with the axis of the plug (8) and are designed to provide a seal when the tap is closed.
