System for determining position on airport taxiways

Photoelectric barriers 1 are provided along taxiways, runways, etc. at an airport so as to detect when an aircraft interrupts an infrared beam. Coded information is transmitted to receivers 5 and decoders 6 in the aircraft and to similar equipment in the control tower. A display 7 in each aircraft and a display Sin the control tower give information on the position of each aircraft on the taxiways, runways, etc and a warning signal when the aircraft is at the entrance or exit of intersections. Each pilot and traffic controller is thus aware of the position of each aircraft in the airport and with respect to adjacent aircraft, and is made aware of hazardous positions at intersections. Airport safety is therefore greatly improved and the danger of collisions is substantially reduced.
