A frame supports two pusher mechanisms and a pair of vertically aligned upper and lower (5) units. The lower unit includes a retainer disposed immediately upstream of a die (54) and a plunger (52). The retainer is vertically movable between retracted and projected positions. In the projected position, an upper end portion (205) of the retainer projects from the die top. When projected, the end portion engages a peripheral edge of a head (17) of one fastener element (3) to prevent its displacement. Another fastener element is held by the upper unit.
