ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREThis invention relates to a method of providing imper-vious closure joints for clad metals which comprises weldingabutting portions of the backing metal layer of pieces of cladmetals characterized by applying an impervious coating over thejoint between the pieces and over adjacent portions of the sur-face of the cladding metal layer of such pieces by plasma arcspray. A clad metal joint is also provided in which clad metalmembers having a cladding metal surface layer and a backingmetal layer are joined by a fusion weld joining opposing por-tions of the backing layers. The joint has an impervious plas-ma arc spray overlay thereover between the cladding metal sur-face layers and which extends for a short distance over theadjacent portions of the cladding metal layers and which isbonded thereto. The invention provides an advance in the artover known clad metal joint closures. More specifically, thetechnique of this invention permits applying an overlay of ahigher melting point cladding metal to a backing metal surfaceof a lower melting point without excessive heating of the back-ing metal. The invention is useful in the production of cladvessels for the chemical process industry.
