A gas-fired apparatus having a solenoid valve (30) which is controlled by a control circuit which produces a control signal (111, 112, 113) the duty cycle of which is dependent upon the difference in temperature sensed by a thermistor (101) and a selectable reference (100). The apparatus may comprise a gas-fired air heater for domestic purposes.
