In a method for cooling of batches, in particular of steel wire or -bandbunden in discontinuously operating industrial furnaces, preferably in annealing furnaces, the batch heating and cooling the batch under protective gas circulation takes place. In order to shorten the cooling and to reduce the power consumption of the circulation fan, the protective gas composition before the start of the cooling process and _/ or during this operation is changed in the sense of a reduction of the specific shielding gas weight.
