The piston has a crown (1) with a skirt below it. A recess (2) is formed in the crown which constitutes the combustion chamber when the piston is at top dead centre. After the piston has been initially formed, sections of it are heat treated and further metal layers deposited to prestress it so as to reduce the working stresses in operation. This operation is confined to limited zones. The zones (ZE) which are subject to tension in operation are treated to give a compressive initial stress. Zones subject to compression are prestressed in tension.
