A proposed method of prolonging the service life of electrodes in electrical resistance welding machines provides for the electrode tip (6, 7) to be surrounded by a shielding gas, in order to prevent weakening of the tip (6, 7) as a result of oxidation. In order to feed the shielding gas to the electrode tip (6, 7), a gas nozzle (8) is provided which is attached to the electrode shaft (5) and has a gas outlet opening (17) through which the electrode tip (6, 7) passes.
