The open tank contains water and a surface wave generator in contact with the water. The system is used as an educational aid to demonstrate wave propogation. The wave generator consists of a tube with one end clipping into the water and the other end fastened to a connecting pioe which is itself joined to the narrow end of a fixing funnel. The wide end of the funnel is joined to the rim of a loud speaker. The speaker is powered by a circuit with frequency and amplitude controls to compress the air trapped in the tube and set the water into motion generating waves. A magnetized plate is attached to one side of the tank and the tube is held in position by an angled metal plate attached to it and held by the magnet. To produce plane waves the tube is terminated by a plate with side walls, open on one side which sits on the bottom of the tank.
