The jack (D) operated comb (C) or harrow complements a compactor treating refuse in a handling and transit container (A), to prevent the back surge of the refuse during the recovery stroke of the compacting organ (G). The comb provides complementary thrust, incorporating both fixed and pivoting fingers (F), which lock when the compacting thrust is applied and are released during the recovery stroke. Two jacks positioned on the lateral faces of the loading funnel (E) may be used, their movements being co-ordinated with those of the compacting organ.
