Water softening plant with an inlet for water to be softened and an outlet for softened water, an ion exchanger between inlet and outlet, a salt container, and a control valve connected in the inlet and outlet and connectable to the salt container and also to a drain for controlling operating phases of the water softening plant, characterized in that the control valve (4) has a first valve unit (7) with a first shut-off valve (9) for the inlet (15) and a second shut-off valve (10) for the outlet (19) and a second valve unit (8) which is functionally connected to the first valve unit (7), which is connectable to the salt container (6) and the drain (32) and controls the inlet to, and outlet from, the ion exchanger (5) in accordance with the operating phases of the water softening plant (1).
