Microbiological purification of water contaminated with mineral oil - by adding a mixt. of a phosphorus source (esp. lecithin) and a nitrogen source in assimilable form (BE 1.3.78)
Sweet water and seawater are purified of crude oil, oil products and their derivs. using cpds. which contain P and slowly releasable N in assimilable form for the microorganisms present in the water to metabolise the hydrocarbons. The P-contg. cpds. are lecithin and phosphatides of both natural and synthetic origin. Pref. suitable N sources are principally hydantoins and amides and/or allophanates, polyamines, acyl ureas and esters of hydantoin and allantoin acids as well as aldehyde-urea condensation products. The lecithin acts both as a P source as well as dispersing agent. The cpds. used are non-toxic, easily available, storable and applied. The process accelerates the natural biodegradation of the impurities without disturbing the ecological balance. The N sources accelerate the process.
