Novel 2-phenoxypropionic acid derivatives of pentitols of the heterocyclic ether type, of the general formula IMAGE in which one of the substituents Y is the group IMAGE and the other four substituents Y, in each case two of them, form an optionally substituted methylene group of the formula IMAGE in which R1 and R2 are identical or different and in each case denote hydrogen, a C1-C10-alkyl radical, a C1-C10-alkyl radical which is monosubstituted or polysubstituted by halogen, C1-C6-alkoxy, phenoxy and/or halogenophenoxy, or denote an aryl-C1-C3-alkyl radical, an aryl-C1-C3-alkyl radical which is monosubstituted or polysubstituted by C1-C6-alkyl, halogen, C1-C6-alkoxy, nitro and/or trifluoromethyl, or denote a C3-C8-cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical, an aromatic hydrocarbon radical, or an aromatic hydrocarbon radical which is monosubstituted or polysubstituted by C1-C6-alkyl, halogen, C1-C6-alkoxy, nitro and/or trifluoromethyl, or R1 and R2 together with the adjacent C atom represent a C3-C8-cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical, R is halogen, C1-C6-alkoxy, C1-C6-alkyl, nitro and/or the trifluoromethyl group, U and Z in each case are an oxygen or a sulphur atom, and n represents the numbers 0, 1 or 2, the preparation of these compounds, and the herbicidal compositions containing them.
