The dial (10) carries composite needles (17) each with a flexible side element (18) formed with a lateral arch (20). Each serves as a jack butt for rib knitting. Each needle (17) is slidable in a dial groove (14) which has a widened portion (22) for accommodating the lateral arch (22) as the needle (17) is projected and retracted during knitting.
