A retaining device (7) for a filter bag (10) of a suction cleaner, is arranged to be fitted in an opening in a container (11) for housing the filter bag, and includes an elbowed lever (2) hingedly mounted on pivot (9) on a base of the device. The lever (2) has a forked end (3) embracing the periphery (4) of an air inlet nozzle (1) of the device and is constructed to retain a base plate (10A) of the filter bag when the bag is fitted on the device. The lever (2) is resiliently biased by a spring (8) and has an opening (6) in which an edge of the base plate (10A) can engage, fitting of the base plate (10A) on the device causing the elbowed lever (2) to pivot into a position, against the bias of the spring, in which position the filter bag by its base plate (10A) is held on the retaining device.
