The invention relates to a process for producing a working inoculum for the cultivation of edible mushrooms, in particular oyster mushrooms, in which a prepared substrate is inoculated with a mycelium obtained in as pure and sterile a manner as possible from natural or artificial mushroom cultures. After the mycelium has grown through the substrate, a further processing to give a working inoculum is carried out by drying using, preferably, air. The drying is carried out in such a way that only mycelial growth is interrupted and the working inoculum remains storable for a relatively long period.
