The invention relates to a switch insert 1 which is used for installation in flameproof housings 4 which are encapsulated in a pressure-tight manner. Said switch insert 1 is provided with a switching handle 29 which acts via a switching shaft 10 (which is locked in its individual switching positions and is supported in an axially sprung manner) on a switch 8 which is located in the housing interior 5. The end of the switching shaft 10 has an obliquely running transverse hole 27. The shaft 28 of the switching handle 29 passes obliquely through said transverse hole 27. On both sides of the switching shaft 10, the shaft 28 of the switching handle 29 engages in in each case one opening 35, 36 in the housing part 23, which openings 35, 36 run in the operating direction of the switching handle 29 and expand like elongated holes. The two openings 35, 36 are located diametrically opposite one another and are arranged offset with respect to one another in the axial direction of the switching shaft 10.
