The invention relates to an electric toasting device for toasting slices of bread, having a toasting compartment with electric heating resistors and with an inlet passage and an outlet passage for the slices of bread, the compartment receiving the slices of bread to be toasted in each case in a single layer. The device additionally contains horizontal supporting and sliding means for the slices of bread, which pass through the toasting compartment, and a precisely time-controlled automatic feeding mechanism which performs to-and-fro horizontal displacing movements in order, each time, to introduce a single slice of bread into the toasting compartment through the inlet passage and push out the previously toasted, finished slice of bread through the outlet passage. This feeding mechanism removes the slices of bread to be toasted successively from a stack of slices of bread supported on the supporting and guiding elements in the immediate vicinity of the inlet passage into the toasting compartment.
