PURPOSE:To obtain a green compact reducing the chipping of a tool during machining by passing molten Al or a molten Al alloy for producing Al or Al alloy powder to remove the nonmetallic inclusions from the molten metal and by using powder produced from the treated molten metal. CONSTITUTION:Molten Al or a molten Al alloy for producing Al or Al alloy powder is passed through a filter of about 100-2,000mum mesh size to remove nonmetallic inclusions from the molten metal. The inclusions affect the machinability of a green compact of powder produced from the molten metal. A ceramic foam filter made of a cordierite-alumina mixture may be used as the filter. Since powder produced from the treated molten metal are nearly freed of nonmetallic inclusions, a green compact reducing the chipping of a tool during machining and having satisfactory surface roughness after finishing is obtd. by using the powder.
