A process for the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of cellulose to ethanol which comprises in reacting delignified cellulose, nutrients as herein described and yeast at a pH of 4 to 5 and a temperature of 34 to 45 degree c to obtain ethanol, characterized in that the broth consisting of the reaction medium is subjected to the step of vacuum cycling for removing ethanol formed during the reaction to keep its level in the broth between 0.5% to 2.5% by weight.
