The flowing speed of a substrate through an anaerobic filter is determined by the formation time. The anaerobic formation time is reduced in dynamic anaerobic filters by the increase of the intensity of material transfer between the bacteria and the substrate. This method allows to increase the intensity of material transfer through a relative pulsatory movement between the substrate (S) and the biomass of bacteria adhering to a support material (7). The substrate (S) is introduced into the filtration chamber of the fermenter (1) through an inlet opening (3). A relative pulsatory movement is then imparted either to the substrate (S) or to the support material (7), or to both. The escape gas is exhausted through a gas outlet (6). The filtration chamber can be drained through the discharge opening (5). The fermenter can be operated in a plug flow mode. The pulse movement can be obtained mechanically (9, 10) or by using the escape gases.
