Pref. compsns. are 20-35 and 2-12 vol.% whiskers which are pref. Al2 O3, AlN, BeO, B4C, graphite or Si3N4 or esp. SiC or mixts. thereof. Al2O3 matrix can pref. include s mall amts. of ZrO2, Y2O3, HfO2, MgO, Si3N4 or TiC. Matrix can pref. be Si3N4.
