Tetracyclic cpds. of formula (I) and their salts are new. In (I) R1 = opt. protected HCO, opt. protected CH2OH, arylaminomethyl, opt. protected COOH or substd. iminomethyl; R21R5 = alkoxy or opt. protected OH; R3 = H; and R4 = Me or opt. protected CH2OH; or R3 + = O= or CH2=; R6 = H, protecting gp., or alkyl. (2) Biologically pure culture of Streptomyces sandaensis No.6897 deposited as FERM BP-792 is new.
