The copper-containing catalyst for the preparation of hydrogen by reaction of gases containing carbon monoxide with steam (converting) at 150 to 300 DEG C can additionally also contain zinc, aluminium and chromium and is doped with alkali. Catalysts of this type containing potassium compounds or caesium compounds are particularly suitable. The ratio of alkali to copper, calculated as oxide, is between 0.0025 and 0.25. The purpose of the invention is the reduction in by-product formation and the increase in conversion.
