protoplast fusion techniques are used to obtain a parent plant which is male sterile cytoplasmatiquement but which may also have characteristics, such as herbicide tolerance and a winter phenotype. Mitochondria of the sole of Colsa conferring a male sterility are characterized genotypically. This allows identification of the parents of the desired fusion product and the characterization of the fusion product itself. It also allows the production of seeds genotypically consistent in providing a means to precisely select parents from a cross from which the hybrid seed is produced.
