For sighted persons to produce braille script, known typewriters are operatively connected to embossed script machines which permit parallel pieces of text to be produced in braille script and in normal script. Since in this case two separate machines are connected to one another, correspondingly high costs are involved. The invention is based on the object of designing typewriters or office machines of a similar design in such a way that they can write either in braille script or normal script directly or from the memory. This object is achieved by means of a switching device by means of which drive bits can be optionally called up from the memory and fed to the printing device in order to produce braille script and normal script on the recording carriers. In this process, a blind person is able to produce a piece of text in braille script and parallel thereto in the memory. Subsequently, the contents of the memory can then be printed out in normal script. Sighted persons can on the one hand use the machine for normal script and on the other hand are able to produce a sheet of braille script from the memory. IMAGE
