PURPOSE:To enhance throughput at the time of continuous printing on papers having the same thickness, be selectively including information on the execution of a paper thickness detecting operation into printing information, and controlling the detecting operation according to the execution information. CONSTITUTION:A sensor 7 sends a detection signal 71 to a controlling part 10 upon detecting a slip 1. According to the detection signal 71, the controlling part 10 sends a driving signal 81 to a feeding roller 8, thereby feeding the paper to a paper thickness detecting part 9, and sends a driving signal 91 to the detecting part 9, thereby executing a paper thickness detecting operation for the slip 1. Thereafter, the controlling part 10 effects printing based on printing data, and outputs a discharging command, thereby discharging the slip 1. In the case of a portion of printing information 11 for the second sheet, the feeding of the slip 1 to the paper thickness detecting part 9 according to a taking-in command 11a is the same as that for the first sheet, but a paper thickness detection stopping command 11b is supplied following the taking-in command 11a, so that the controlling part 10 immediately effects printing and discharge, without outputting the driving signal 91 to the detecting part 9. Thus, when printing papers having the same thickness are continuously printed, the paper thickness detecting operation is conducted only for he first sheet, and is omitted for the second and succeeding sheets, so that higher throughput can be contrived.
