Novel arylcyclobutene monomers contain a single arylcyclobutene moiety and a maleimide or an alpha -ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon group which is directly bonded to the aryl group of the arylcyclobutene. Preferably, the arylcyclobutene moiety is benzocyclobutene and particularly preferred monomers are those correspond to the Formula II: CHEM wherein B is maleimide or an alpha -ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon group and R is separately in each occurrence hydrogen or cyano.
