The furnace has a furnace wall (1) and a material conveyor (4) and comprises, one after the other, a preheating zone (10), a firing zone (12) and a cooling zone (14). In the preheating zone (10) and the cooling zone (14), arranged in parallel, gases are blown in and sucked away. This takes place from the vertical furnace wall on the side of the cooling zone (14), by preheated air being fed to the furnace cross-section, with the consequence that the gases in the furnace cross-section are displaced transversely to the conveying direction of the material conveyor (4) from the side of the cooling zone (14) to the side of the preheating zone (10).
