A control plate (12) recovers the dust or other particulate material in a controlled environment. The plate is illuminated by a light source (14) so that only the dust is shining, and causes the focusing bright spots on a focal plane (25) defined by a CCD array (24). The focal plane is played on a computer (32) which is programmed to determine the dimensions and number of dust particles.
